However, the nation faces a complex set of challenges that impact the quality and accessibility of these services. This article examines the condition of public services in South Africa, shedding light on the existing issues and exploring potential pathways for improvement.

**1. Historical Context and Legacy:**

The legacy of apartheid has left deep scars on South Africa's public services. Decades of unequal resource distribution have led to disparities in education, healthcare, housing, and more. Despite significant progress since the democratic transition, these disparities continue to impact marginalized communities.

**2. Education and Skills Gap:**

The education system faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, and unequal access to quality education. As a result, South Africa grapples with a significant skills gap, hindering economic growth and perpetuating social inequalities.

**3. Healthcare Inequities:**

While strides have been made in extending healthcare access, disparities persist between urban and rural areas. Understaffed hospitals, limited resources, and unequal distribution of medical facilities pose significant hurdles to delivering quality healthcare services to all citizens.

**4. Housing and Basic Services:**

Access to decent housing remains a challenge, with informal settlements proliferating in urban centers. Inadequate sanitation and unreliable access to clean water contribute to health risks, reinforcing the cycle of poverty in vulnerable communities.

**5. Corruption and Governance Challenges:**

Corruption and mismanagement within the public sector have eroded trust and hindered service delivery. The diversion of funds intended for public services to private pockets exacerbates the challenges faced by citizens, particularly those in need.

**6. Infrastructure Deficits:**

South Africa's infrastructure needs significant investment to support economic growth and enhance public services. Outdated transportation systems, inconsistent energy supply, and insufficient connectivity limit progress and hinder development.

**7. Pathways to Improvement:**

- **Transparency and Accountability:** Strengthening governance structures and combating corruption through transparency and accountability measures are crucial steps.

- **Equitable Resource Allocation:** Prioritizing equitable distribution of resources across regions is essential to bridge the gaps in access to public services.

- **Investment in Education:** Enhancing the education system through improved teacher training, infrastructure, and curriculum reform can address the skills gap.

- **Healthcare Access:** Targeted investment in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, and innovative service delivery models can narrow healthcare disparities.

- **Inclusive Urban Planning:** Developing sustainable urban planning strategies that provide decent housing, sanitation, and access to basic services is essential.

- **Digital Transformation:** Leveraging technology for e-governance and digital services can enhance efficiency and access to public services.

**Conclusion:**

South Africa's public services face a complex web of challenges rooted in historical inequalities, governance issues, and resource deficits. Addressing these issues requires a multi-faceted approach that involves transparent governance, equitable resource allocation, strategic investment, and a commitment to inclusivity. By navigating these challenges with determination and collaboration, South Africa can aspire to provide its citizens with the quality public services they deserve, fostering a more inclusive and prosperous nation for all.
Deenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09803600314104544052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37468102.post-13202940094835377572023-08-08T21:25:00.004-07:002023-08-08T21:25:48.791-07:00The Next Phase in Banking: Disruptive Trends in South Africa

**Introduction:**

The banking landscape in South Africa is on the cusp of a remarkable transformation. As technological advancements and changing consumer preferences converge, a new phase of banking is emerging, set to disrupt traditional norms and reshape the industry. This article delves into the disruptive trends that are poised to redefine banking in South Africa.

**1. Digital-First Banking:**

The proliferation of smartphones and improved internet connectivity has paved the way for digital-first banking in South Africa. Traditional brick-and-mortar branches are being challenged by innovative digital platforms that offer customers convenient access to banking services. Fintech startups are leading the charge, offering mobile apps for account management, payments, investments, and more. This trend empowers customers with greater control over their finances while reducing operational costs for banks.

**2. Open Banking and Collaboration:**

Open banking is gaining traction in South Africa, encouraging collaboration between banks and third-party financial service providers. By sharing customer data securely, customers can enjoy more personalized and comprehensive financial solutions. This trend fosters a competitive environment where financial institutions must focus on delivering value to retain and attract customers.

**3. Financial Inclusion and Access:**

A significant portion of South Africa's population remains unbanked or underbanked. Disruptive banking trends aim to bridge this gap by leveraging technology to provide accessible and affordable financial services to previously underserved communities. Mobile banking, microloans, and low-cost digital payment solutions are enabling greater financial inclusion.

**4. Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies:**

The adoption of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies is another disruptive force in South African banking. Blockchain offers enhanced security, transparency, and efficiency for transactions and record-keeping. Cryptocurrencies provide an alternative investment avenue and remittance solution, particularly valuable in a country with a large diaspora.

**5. Personalized Banking Experience:**

Advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence enable banks to deliver personalized experiences to customers. By analyzing spending patterns, financial goals, and preferences, banks can offer tailored product recommendations and financial advice. This not only enhances customer satisfaction but also cultivates long-term relationships.

**6. AI-Powered Customer Service:**

Artificial intelligence is transforming customer service in the banking sector. Chatbots and virtual assistants provide instant support, address queries, and even facilitate transactions around the clock. This not only improves customer engagement but also frees up human resources for more complex tasks.

**7. Sustainable Banking Practices:**

With increasing awareness of environmental and social issues, sustainable banking practices are gaining momentum. Customers are showing preference for banks that align with their values, investing in eco-friendly initiatives and socially responsible projects. This trend encourages financial institutions to become agents of positive change.

**Conclusion:**

The next phase of banking in South Africa is set to be marked by disruption and innovation. From digital-first banking to blockchain adoption, these trends are redefining how financial services are offered and consumed. As banks and fintech companies navigate these changes, the key to success lies in staying agile, customer-centric, and adaptable to the evolving landscape. Embracing these trends will not only ensure survival but also position banking institutions as pioneers in shaping the future of finance in South Africa.
Deenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09803600314104544052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37468102.post-12394368652747661112020-04-21T13:51:00.000-07:002020-04-21T22:19:26.522-07:00Easy To Make Perfect Scones

and according to the internet, we and everyone else on social media are professional bakers. Seriously, have you gone through your social media lately, literally every second post is about cooking or baking.

But this is a good thing, what I mean, is that the world has changed, you are not getting any annoying Keeping Up With The Joneses posts anymore. Everyone is on an equal playing field and starting to realise how easy it is to bake or cook.

My recipe is for easy to make perfect scones. They come out light and airy and tastes amazing. By the way, this is an eggless recipe.

Pre-heat oven to 22o degrees.

What you will need:

1. 2 cups self-raising flour
2. 1 teaspoon baking powder
3. a pinch of salt
4. 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar
5. 40g butter or Rama margarine (cubed)
6. 1/2 cup of milk

What to do:

Sift in flour, baking powder and add salt and sugar and mix together. Now add your butter cubes, this should be cold, so don't melt it before adding to the mixture, and mix by hand until you get a breadcrumb effect.

Now add the milk in portions, not all at once, this is to make sure that your dough is just combined and not 'wet'.

Sprinkle flour on your baking surface and roll into a 'snake/tube' and cut into 12 pieces for small scones or 6 pieces for large scones.

Grease your baking tray and pat down your pieces onto the tray, pop into the oven for 10min. After the 10 minutes switch your oven off and leave for an extra minute or two.

Remove and serve immediately. I whipped up some fresh cream and topped it off with apricot jam :) the best!

Ok, so during our lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we've been trying out numerous new baking and cooking recipes, just like the rest of the world that is in lockdown.

Trying new recipes can be real fun when doing it with the family, especially young kids. No matter what their age, all kids enjoy baking, even teenagers (deep down, maybe deep, deep down).

So on our 11th day of lockdown, we decided to try out my aunt's recipe for Mielie Cake. She also gave us a few variations to the recipe, so I will let you know about those as well.

Before we start pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees celsius.

You will need:

1. About 4 to 6 sweetcorns
2. 1 cup butter
3. 2 eggs
4. 1/2 teaspoon salt
5. 1 teaspoon baking powder
6. 1 cup self-raising flour
7. 3/4 cup castor sugar

How to make it:

Grate the sweetcorn. Mix dry ingredients and wet ingredients (with the sweetcorn) separately and then combine and mix them both. Grease up a baking tray, pour in your mixture and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Don't over bake as it will dry up the cake.

Variations:

Here are some of the variations that my aunt gave us. If you want to make the cake vegetarian, then you can substitute the eggs for vinegar. You can also increase your sweetcorn to 6 and cut out the self-raising flour, which gives you a pure mielie cake. But I like the flour option as the cake comes out fluffy and moist.

Jam Turnovers are an easy peasy tasty treat, especially for the kids or to enjoy yourself at teatime. This recipe is so easy that your baking skill level can even be zero and you will be able to pull it off.

Ingredients:

1. Roll of readymade puff pastry
2. Jam (I like to use apricot)
3. Milk to brush the pastry
4. Sugar to sprinkle
5. Icing sugar to dust
6. Flour for dusting rolling surface

Method:

Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees (celsius). Sprinkle a bit of flour on rolling surface or countertop. Roll out the readymade puff pastry onto the surface and you can use a rolling pin if you want to make the puff pastry a little bigger. Cut the pastry into even squares, you will usually get six pieces from one roll of puff pastry.

Place a teaspoon of jam into the middle of each square and fold over into a triangle. Press the ends down firmly so the turnover is sealed and the jam can't escape when baking.

Baste the turnovers with milk and sprinkle normal sugar over it, I like to use brown sugar. Place into a greased baking tray and bake in the oven for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Once done, remove from oven and dust with icing sugar and let it cool a bit and then enjoy your easy tasty treat.
One game that we came up with was a competition to draw the coronavirus, the first prize can be a treat and second prize can also be a treat... everyone gets a prize!

But just add a twist to it and add some educational stuff to it, like the virus spreads by water molecules, when you cough or sneeze, and how you can take measures to prevent it by washing your hands with soap, etc.

So my kids did their rendition of the virus and they were both winners!

This means that citizens that are not involved in essential services have to stay at home, or wherever they are at the time of lockdown.

This poses some issues for us that have to stay at home and provide creative meals for our families, especially when kids are involved. So we asked our kids what they would like to eat today and the immediate response was PIZZA!

Ok, so there are no readymade pizza bases in the freezer... what do you do?

After a quick search on the internet, you can make do with some ingredients that you have at home. However, most of the recipes call for a yeast-based dough, what if you don't have yeast. Well, do not despair. All you need is some self-raising flour, and the rest you should have.

The bonus to making your own pizza is that you can get your whole family involved, especially the kids, because it's so easy to do, a great activity for all ages. So here goes:

Ingredients:
1. 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour
2. 1/4 cup cooking oil
3. 1 teaspoon of salt
4. About 1/4 cup of milk
5. And toppings i.e. cheese, tomatoes,
etc.

Method:
Mix your dry ingredients, add in your oil and then slowly add in your milk while mixing, you may not need all the milk, just keep adding until you get a good soft dough.

Sprinkle some flour onto a rolling surface and roll out your dough, either by hand our better, use a rolling pin. Once your dough is rolled out to a thickness of about 5mm, place onto a greased(I used Spray and Cook) baking tray.

Pre-heat oven to 180C.

Baste your pizza dough with tomato sauce and start adding your toppings. I used mushrooms, peppers, onions, baked beans, sausage(pre-cooked), and cheese.

Bake for approximately 15mins or until your crust starts browning. Remove and let it cool a bit and serve immediately.

Then you need to look
at a Cloud PBX or PABX system.

This solution allows you to have a virtual hosted switchboard that is fully customizable and scalable at minimal costs. MWCOM offers such a solution. Starting from R99pm, you get a business number with full switchboard capabilities, which also allows your business telephone line to go into night mode and take voicemails so that you never lose a lead.

You also get full analytical data on call times, duration etc. As your business grows you can scale it up to meet your needs and not break the bank. You can also take your switchboard with you by using a mobile app.

Call rates are low compared to traditional fixed-line systems. And you don't need to worry about lines going down, because as long as you have an internet connection your clients will be able to contact you, you can switch from your fixed line internet connection to a 3G/4G failover at anytime.

The strange thing was when I opened the same application (in this case it was Safari), it opened fine, and this is on the same MacBook.

I then investigated and finally figured out that when she clicked on the app to launch she was pressing the touchpad a bit too hard and long, whenever I opened the app it was a quick but firm tap and the app would open.

I figured out that there is an additional click on the touchpad/trackpad that performs additional functions. You can feel the additional click if you slowly apply pressure to the touchpad, you will get the first click and after continuously applying further pressure there is a second click.

After some research on Google, I found out that this feature is called "Force Click" by Apple and performs various other functions depending on what app is opened.

I'm glad to share the news that Afrihost has decided to go full mobile with voice and data. The ISP recently announced that they will be piloting their network, which rides over MTNs network.

As an Afrihost customer I was initially impressed with their mobile data products and liked the fact that there are no contracts and I can vary my spend when ever I wanted. Well our friends at Afrihost have done it again, but this time with mobile voice services.

You can now get a Afrihost sim, or port your existing number to Afrihost and reap the benefits of true flexible mobile services. You choose what you want to get billed for and once you reach your limit your service stops until you top up again. You can also setup an automatic top up so that you don't have to go with your services being temporarily suspended.

This will be a big threat to FNB Connect which has a similar type of service, where you can choose and adjust your voice and data whenever you want, but Afrihost comes in far cheaper than FNB when it comes to data costs, which I believe will be the deciding factor that will tip the scales toward Afrihost. Another huge factor is the network quality i.e. MTN (Afrihost) vs. CellC (FNB). We welcome this revolution that Afrihost will bring to the market!

But at the time Microsoft did have their own version of instant messaging and video call i.e. Microsoft Lync.

Lync did what it supposed to do but was not widely used, infact the mobile version of the software was not a very good instant messenger at all. There were constant delays when communicating from mobile device, however the desktop version did the job well.

So where does Skype fit in? The main reason that Skype was purchased was because of its dominance in the IM market and it was and still is the preferred video chat software around the world.

Recently Microsoft announced that it will do away with its Lync software and port all users to Sype For Business. This will give Lync users the same look and feel of Skype along with the mobility and quality of IM and video chat services that normal Skype currently offers.

Network admins also have the option of opening Skype For Business to normal Skype users so you can chat to friends and family as well as stakeholders from other companies who sit in different domains.

This is going to be widely accepted by corporates as they have already started embracing social media as a great marketing tool. The launch is said to happen soon so look out for it!
Because as a kid I remember the thrill and awe that I was in when my folks took me to watch Jurassic Park back in 1993. And what makes Jurassic World special is that I got to take my daughter to it, who is about the same age as me when I watched the first one back in '93 and I new exactly how she felt before, during and after the movie.

The movie takes CGI to another level, bringing to life the dinosaurs that kids dream about. Even in the original Jurassic Park, at the time everything seemed so realistic. Of course there are going to be people that will slam the graphics and animatronics, but you have to look at it from a child's point of view and remember what you experienced when you were young.

Although Colin Trevorrow will never come top what Spielberg did in 1993, he did come close. He did well to instill the same awe and wonder that we experienced as kids.

A must to watch on the big screen. If you were lucky enough to watch the original on the big screen then this is a must.

FNB has taken a big step in the banking industry and have taken their FNB Connect service completely mobile by launching their very own SIM cards. It's all part of a greater synergy that the bank is trying, and succeeding, to achieve. The service is available from 15 June 2015.

FNB will be selling their SIM cards separately from their mobile devices. Although initial press releases indicated that their pricing would be a tad bit off the mark, which may cause this idea to crash, their actual launch pricing seems to be highly competitive, especially the voice and data 24 month contracts. With the data contracts you get day + night data e.g. for R95 you get 2gb + 2gb night data. Another plus is that you can get up to 40% of your bill back in eBucks!

If you are on the prepaid option you can do top ups directly from the FNB App. I predict that this app is going to be something that we can't live without in the near future.

RICA is a thing of the past, because the sim is activated via your Online Banking profile which is already FICA compliant. All other management tools for your SIM card will be via the online banking portal as well, such as real time usage and call history.

The service is run via the CellC network. Although CellC's network has been criticized before, they are, like FNB, making big strides through innovative ways of doing things.

I hope to see this service succeed as it will bring greater competition to the already over inflated mobile communications prices in South Africa.

I was super impressed recently when I took the family out for lunch at Gitano's at

The Pavilion shopping centre. We enjoyed our meal and it was time to call for the bill. Our waiter came by with it and I noticed that there was a QR code on the bill. I asked the waiter about it and he gave me the run down on it.

Basically, by scanning the code using the free Zapper app you can instantly pay for your bill and get R25 off! So I gave it a shot, for R25 why not. I've got an android phone, so I went to the Play Store, searched for "Zapper App", installed it and went through the registration. The app asks for some of your details and you have to load a credit or debit card onto it. Once done, you are ready to pay. All this took me about 5 minutes to setup.

I scanned the code and the Zapper app picked up the details of my bill. It also gave me options to load on a tip for the waiter. It then gave me a total amount, and when ready I just confirmed the payment and it was all done. No need to sign anything, and the restaurant got notified of the payment immediately. No worries and no fuss. I would definitely like to see this in more places in South Africa, it just makes sense.
The long awaited voice calls over one of the biggest IM service providers, Whatsapp, is now available. By upgrading your version of Whatsapp to the latest you will notice that you now have a phone icon on your chat sessions, if you were already on the latest version this service will be automatically enabled. The app developer has been making some major strides recently, even introducing a PC based web interface for Whatsapp, by incorporating and innovative barcode scanner.

You can also get to the call menu by just clicking on the avatar of your contact. The service uses your default ringtone when you are receiving a call and you answer by sliding the green answers icon across your screen, just like you would when answering a normal call.

Voice quality seems to be good, however I did notice that there was a significant delay in the conversation. But this is expected, and I'm sure the guys over at Whatsapp will have this resolved in the near future. Data usage is also minimal, not to sure what codec they are using but it is providing good audio quality, which may also be the cause of the delay, but we shouldn't rule out South Africa's "state of the art" broadband network.

Whatsapp currently does not have any settings for voice calls, so you can't tweak it to work in your current network conditions. But it is still early stages for the IM provider and I'm sure that they are going to introduce Whatsapp to fixed and mobile number calls, of course this is a service that you will surely have to pay for and I'd like to see what the charges amount to.

I currently use FNB Connect and R50 gets me about an hour of calls to mobile numbers and is per second billing as well. Call quality is also good, the competition will be healthy to bring down call charges. It may even start to impact the mobile network providers and hopefully they will be able to bring down their charges as well!

connectivity. Previously I posted an article on Afrihost, who where giving out
amazing data deals that run over the MTN network. MTN recently took some
interest in them and bought out a big chunk of the company, and I'm not implying anything here but, shortly after that the amazing deals from Afrihost came to an end.

So I was on the hunt again and came across Axxess, very similar to what
Afrihost was offering but coming in just a tad bit cheaper. It's seems that they are running on the same technology i.e. they are piggy backing on the MTN network and you are able to load your Axxess APN onto your MTN contract sim card.

You also get a simple but efficient control panel that you can load as an app on your Apple or Android device, giving you access to your usage 24/7 and also giving you the ability to top up your account at any time. Another plus, and I do believe that this will seal the deal, is the 3 months rollover i.e. is you have not finished your data in the current month it will rollover to the next and if still not used it will expire after the 3rd month.

The sign up was simple and quick, I registered on the website, www.axxess.co.za, and loaded my credit card details, the next day my APN was ready to use, I had an issue with provisioning my sim card due to it being provisioned with Afrihost, but if it wasn't for that I would have been up and running on the same day.

So far the 3G service has been reliable with the APN not going dead as what used to occasionally happen with Afrihost. Top ups are immediate within the Axxess app and the online control panel. To all MTN contract customers out there this is a no brainer, if you have an MTN contract and you use data, you have to go with Axxess.

Year on year there is an exponential increase in the human population, and it's about time we seriously thought about alternatives.

Mars One has taken the next leap for mankind by starting an initiative to transport humans on a one way trip, i.e. no return, to start a colony on planet Mars. Candidates volunteer themselves and then go through a series of interviews and physicals and eventually shortlisted for the trip to Mars.

There will be multiple one way trips in groups of fours. Each trip will bring in supplies and equipment and materials to expand the colony. Eventually the aim would be to sustain themselves without aid from Earth. The first trip is scheduled to leave in 2023 and will arrive at Mars in 2024.

The magnitude of this event is beyond comprehension. If the first mission is successful it may be the beginning of the next stage of evolution for mankind.

There are questions around the feasibility of the project. Although there are various companies that have already bought into the idea, a project of this nature does not have a budget. Expenses are literally open ended. Think about it, there is no telling what to expect. Date from Curiosity is limited, We know about the composition of the ground and air in and around Mars, but once there is a human life form on the actual planet surface, that human brain that is absorbing all the information from the planet will be the ultimate data capturing and processing computer of all time to tell us what we really need to do to colonise and survive on Mars.

But once that is done, you have to ask yourself the question... "now what?". Will it be just like it is on Earth? I'm not talking about buildings, parks and beaches etc., I'm talking about economy, currency, politics. Will it be the same or will humankind start a new way of thinking? Now you start to think about all the sci-fi movies and series that you've ever watched in your life, personally I think that the Star Trek scenario will prevail, but all we can do is wait and see what mankind chooses to do.

It has a million plus downloads so far on Google's Play Store and the best part is, it's free. It's available for both Android and iPhone.

You drive around on a little red fire truck and put out fires that are all about the islands. The villagers that you have to save are called Titans.

You are given a tank of water and the less you use to put out fires the more points you get. There are also a lot of puzzles that you have to solve, by using a bit of physics.

The game comes with great graphics and the best part is that there are no annoying ads all over the screen. The only downside to it is that you get only eight levels to play and if you want to play more then you have to get the full paid version. For just 17mb I think it's worth a shot. You will definitely enjoy it although it's very short lived.

Some time ago I blogged about getting affordable data through FNB Connect. Where you can load APN settings on your phone for FNB Connect and purchase prepaid data. At first this seemed to be far cheaper than what the networks were offering in terms of bolt on data. Over time the networks revised their data costs and dropped the bolt on data to a fraction less than what FNB Connect was offering. So I moved back to MTN, which is my service provider.

Then the networks started offering cheaper stand alone data contracts, such as Cell C's 2gb for R99p/m. I then got myself a mifi and went that route. But the biggest issue was that the mifi battery doesn't last very long and was forced to switch back to my network.

This became frustrating because we know that mobile data is way cheaper than the bolt on data that the networks are shoving down our throats. I then searched for APNs similar to FNB Connect and came across Afrihost.

Basically what they do is offer data packages via standalone sim cards or as an APN through MTN. So I was in luck, because I am on MTN. I browsed through the packages they offer and came across a package called Mobile 500 for R58p/m, which comes with 500mb data and an additional 500mb anytime data for free!

So I followed the prompts and pulled out my credit card and loaded the details into the site. 2 minutes later I got an email stating that my APN has been successfully linked to my sim. I then loaded the APN settings onto my phone and gave it a shot. I was dumbfounded! In under 10 minutes Afrihost had me up and running and I was able to use all functions as normal. I immediately cancelled my bolt on bundle that I had with Autopage for MTN, which was R79 for 300mb.

The beauty about all this is that if I reach my limit my data service will stop until I top it up again with one of their various options such as R99p/gb or wait till the next billing cycle. Usage notifications are sent to you periodically or you can just check online.

The whole process was simple, fast and efficient. Their website is informative and tells you as it is, with no hidden traps. All I can say is, "Well done Afrihost!"
